Nico Williams, a prominent player for Spain and Athletic Club, conveyed a heartfelt message on his social media channels on Sunday. This comes after the attacker faced yet another obstacle in his journey to regain full fitness.
The Spanish national team was competing this weekend, facing Uruguay in the final group stage match. Luis de la Fuente’s team secured a 1-0 victory, advancing as group winners and setting up a knockout round encounter with Austria.
However, Spain experienced two significant personnel losses during the match. Wingers Yéremy Pino and Nico Williams were both compelled to leave the game prematurely due to fitness concerns. Williams sustained a muscular injury that could sideline him for several weeks.
Realizing the possibility of missing the remainder of the World Cup, Nico shared an emotional post on his official ‘X’ account. He wrote: “Today is one of the worst days of my life. I’ve gotten injured again after a very difficult year, during which pubic symphysis pain won many battles against me, but not the war. I managed to overcome it with hard work, sacrifice, and above all, responsibility. It was a year and a half of suffering, sadness, uncertainty, and anxiety. I didn’t know when I would be able to play without pain again or when I would return to a normal life. I even reached the point of living with pain in simple things like going to the bathroom, getting in and out of the car, or just enjoying daily life. Getting back to enjoying playing soccer was my top priority, along with recovering my smile. Because without a smile, without enjoyment, and without being happy, I can’t perform at the highest level. I overcame it. Then came a hamstring injury that tested me once more. I stopped smiling again, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me either. Yesterday, I suffered a new injury from an action where a fellow professional acted out of frustration, discontent, and sadness over the situation he was going through. It was a play that, in my opinion, could have been avoided because it was completely unnecessary. But this won’t stop me either. I know God has a plan for me, and I will keep fighting until the very last moment to get back to doing what I love most: playing soccer, being happy, and bringing joy to many. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for your messages of support. The story isn’t over—we’ll see each other as soon as possible in this World Cup.”
