Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has voiced his frustration with persistent criticism from some fans, suggesting that many simply aren’t observing his performances closely enough.
De Jong has long been a divisive figure. While celebrated by some as a top-tier midfielder globally, others perceive him as too passive and lacking the expected impact given his talent.
The Dutch international is coming off a strong individual performance in the Netherlands’ 5-0 World Cup victory over Sweden on Saturday. Following the match, de Jong took the opportunity to address his detractors in an interview with VI:
“A lot of people don’t actually understand football. They watch, but they don’t truly see. I hear people saying I never play forward passes… but that’s simply not true. If that’s what you think, you’re not really watching.”
