‘I can be a nationalist and say India will win, but…’ Yuvraj is ‘worried’ about the World Cup and thinks we will struggle if…’ There’s a reason Yuvraj Singh is regarded as one of India’s greatest match-winners of all time. Beyond the statistics and the six sixes in an over off Stuart Broad, Yuvraj’s impact on Indian cricket is unparalleled. He was India’s first true No. 4 batsman and remained in that position virtually to the finish.

The most ardent Yuvraj detractors would argue that he could never crack the Test code, but who could in a middle-order that included Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, and VVS Laxman? Long before MS Dhoni captivated the Indian audience with his brutal hitting, Yuvraj made heads turn with his gliding cover drives and easy sixes.

He will be the most vocal fan of the Indian squad when the World Cup arrives in two months, but not one to be swept away by emotions, Yuvraj is concerned about India’s chances in the showcase event. Yuvraj’s primary concern is India’s middle order, which has undergone far too many changes.

Due to injuries to KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Rishabh Pant, India has been forced to rely on Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson, both of whom have yet to master the one-day game. The middle-order difficulties are likely to ease if Rahul and Iyer recover on time, but if they don’t, Yuvraj is sceptical of India’s chances at the World Cup.

“As a patriot, I can say, ‘India will win because I am an Indian.” However, I see a lot of concern in the Indian middle order due to injuries. If such concerns are not addressed, we will suffer, particularly in high-pressure games. Don’t try out pressure games. The skill effort required to bat in the middle order differs greatly from that of an opener. Is there somebody (in team management) who is working with the folks who will be in the middle order? “The middle order is not ready, so someone will have to make them ready,” Yuvraj stated on the Cricket Basu YouTube channel.

“You need to form a partnership if your openers are out early.” Batsmen in the middle order are not simply showy stroke-makers who occupy the crease and begin hitting. He must absorb pressure, drop a couple balls, and form a partnership. It’s a challenging job, and someone with experience is needed over there,” he continued.
