Legendary coach Arrigo Sacchi recently stated that AC Milan`s recent player acquisitions are insufficient to overcome the struggles of their “disastrous” previous season. In contrast, he expressed confidence in Antonio Conte`s Napoli, particularly with players like Scott McTominay and Kevin De Bruyne on board.
Sacchi shared his analysis of Milan and Napoli`s opening Serie A matches in a column for Gazzetta dello Sport. The Rossoneri began their campaign with a surprising 2-1 home defeat against newly promoted Cremonese, while the reigning champions, Napoli, secured a comfortable 2-0 victory away at Sassuolo.
Sacchi`s Analysis: The Need for Time and Support

In his column, Sacchi articulated that “Allegri needs time to construct a cohesive team and instill a particular style of play.” He emphasized the club`s obligation to back both its coach and players.
Reflecting on Milan`s opening loss, Sacchi acknowledged the pain it causes and the disappointment among fans, but he stressed that “character is forged in difficulties.” He firmly believes that anyone expecting Milan to transform after last season`s poor performance merely by signing a few new players was “clearly mistaken.”
He highlighted that despite Cremonese being considered the weaker side, they managed to score twice and secure a win against Milan. Sacchi pinpointed character, team spirit, willingness to sacrifice, and organization as the critical elements for success in football, especially in Serie A. He concluded that Cremonese displayed these qualities, while Milan has yet to develop them, suggesting patience is needed for the team to improve, adding, “and I’m sure Allegri will set things straight.”
McTominay and De Bruyne were instrumental in Napoli`s victory, each finding the net. Sacchi views this strong start as a sign that Napoli will be the formidable team to beat this season.
Conte`s Unwavering Focus at Napoli

The former Milan coach commented that Conte could “rest easy” if McTominay continues his impressive form from last season and if De Bruyne maintains the world-class level he showed at Manchester City.
Sacchi understands that Conte is not one to simply bask in victory. He`s likely already focused on the next match, diligently analyzing any imperfections from the game against Sassuolo. This relentless pursuit of improvement, Sacchi noted, is precisely what Conte desires for his Napoli squad.
He affirmed that one thing is certain: any team aspiring to win the Scudetto this season will undoubtedly face a significant challenge from a “hungry” Napoli side.
